Crypto capital gains calculator
Enter what you paid and what you sold for. The calculator works out your cost basis, your gain or loss and, from the two dates, whether United States rules treat it as short-term or long-term.
One sale
The example is the one from Lesson 57: 1 ETH bought for $2,000 with a $20 fee and sold for $3,000 with a $30 fee.
How to read the result
Your cost basis is what the crypto cost you, including the fee you paid to buy it. Your gain or loss is what you received, after the selling fee, minus that basis.
The holding period starts the day after you acquire the crypto. Under United States rules, a gain on crypto held for more than one year is long-term and is taxed at 0%, 15% or 20% depending on your income. A gain on crypto held for one year or less is short-term and is taxed at the same rates as your ordinary income.
A swap counts as a sale. If you exchanged one crypto for another, enter the dollar value of what you received as the amount you sold for.
What this calculator does not do
- It does not know your tax rate, your other gains and losses, or your country's rules. Outside the United States, ignore the holding period line.
- It handles one sale. If you bought the same coin at several prices, you first need to know which units you sold. Lesson 57 explains the two methods.
- It is not tax advice. Check the current rules or ask a qualified adviser before you file.

This page does not look up live prices and does not save or send what you type. It is arithmetic, not advice: prices can fall, and you can lose everything you put in.
