CRYPTO GLOSSARY

Hot wallet

A wallet that keeps your keys on a device that connects to the internet, such as a phone app or browser extension.

Hot wallet in more detail

A hot wallet keeps your keys on a device that connects to the internet. A cold wallet keeps them offline. The difference is the main trade-off between convenience and safety.

A hot wallet is an app on your phone or computer, or an extension in your browser. The keys sit on a device that is online most of the time.

You carry a little cash in your pocket and keep the rest somewhere secure. Many people run their crypto the same way: a hot wallet for spending and a cold wallet for holding.
