CRYPTO GLOSSARY

Base fee

The part of an Ethereum transaction fee that the network sets. It changes with demand and is burned.

Base fee in more detail

The base fee is set by the network and changes with demand. It can rise or fall by up to 12.5% from one block to the next. It is burned.

Prices are quoted in gwei. One gwei is a billionth of an ETH. With a base fee of 10 gwei and a tip of 2 gwei, a simple transfer costs 21,000 × 12 = 252,000 gwei, or 0.000252 ETH.
